Current practices in teaching design of experiments (DOE) range from case studies presented to participants to using a computer-simulation program or even a process simulation such as a catapult. These methods, while sometimes engaging, lack a real-world application. In this presentation, a practical way to teach DOE will be demonstrated in an industrial system.

Electrohydraulic systems with the combination of hydraulic hardware and electronics have offered superior industrial applications in position, velocity, and force/torque control. The experiment will allow participants to identify the key factors affecting the system performance using design of experiments. The performance measures of the system are (1) Response time of the cylinder to a target setpoint position, and (2) Positioning error that reflects the deviation of current cylinder position from the target value.  The ultimate objective is to minimize both.

The aim of this presentation is to demonstrate a method for teaching DOE using a real-world application with two phases where participants will be able to (1) identify the parameters that significantly affect the system performance, and (2) Determine optimal settings for the system to perform consistently. Results of the experiments as well as participant feedback will be shared.
