Keynote Speaker: Thomas Bartman, M.D., Ph.D.
Associate Medical Director for Quality at Nationwide Children's Hospital
Co-Director of Quality Improvement for Neonatal Services

Dr. Bartman

Although Tom received his bachelor’s degree in Biology from MIT, the “engineer’s” way of doing things has always resonated with him. After receiving his MD and PhD degrees from Temple University he embarked on a career of basic science research in heart development and neonatal intensive care until undergoing a career shift to quality improvement in 2010.  Since that time, he has used Deming’s management philosophies and tools of industrial engineering at Nationwide Children's Hospital to direct quality improvement activities across the neonatal services section; to co-direct quality improvement hospital-wide; and to develop educational programs for front-line caregivers, leaders, and future leaders. He is also involved in leadership of quality collaboratives at the local, state, and national level.

Keynote Topic:Strategies and Tactics used to Develop a Robust Quality and Safety Program at the Largest Pediatric Hospital in the U.S.

Successful quality improvement and safety efforts require a number of factors to be present at the institutional, microsystem, and team levels. These include, but are not limited to overall QI strategic planning, senior leadership buy-in, internal and external motivation, quality and safety culture, resource availability, team leadership and skill, front-line buy-in, and education in QI science. This presentation will describe these factors in neonatal services and throughout Nationwide Children's Hospital, with an emphasis on educational programs and building of capacity/competence throughout the workforce.

After the keynote, learn about an actual case study performed at the hospital from Don Buckingham, MBOE- Service Line Quality Improvement Coordinator at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
